Second quarter positive overall

The Pension Fund Index rose by 2.13 points, or 1.03%, in the quarter under review; this represents a change of 5.28% since the start of the year.

 

The index stood at 209.40 points as of June 30, 2024, from a baseline of 100 points at the beginning of 2000. The losses in April (–1.02%) were followed by two positive monthly results: The index rose by 1.25% in May and by 0.82% in June.

 

The lion’s share of positive performance in the second quarter was attributable to equities (+0.78%). Bonds delivered a total return contribution of +0.11%. Real estate (+0.08%) and alternative investments (+0.04%) also managed to improve the quarterly result. The other categories failed to make much of an impact.

The index of the BVG mandatory minimum rate of return (1.25% p.a. since January 1, 2024) rose by 0.50 points (+0.31%) to 162.46 points in the quarter under review from a baseline of 100 at the beginning of January 2000. The return on the Credit Suisse Swiss Pension Fund Index is therefore +0.72% above the BVG requirement in the second quarter.

 

The annualized return on the Credit Suisse Swiss Pension Fund Index (since January 1, 2000) amounted to 3.06% at the end of June 2024. This contrasts with an annualized BVG mandatory minimum rate of return of 2.00%.

The Credit Suisse Swiss Pension Fund Index is calculated on the basis of the returns (prior to deducting management costs) realized by Swiss pension funds whose assets are held at Credit Suisse under a global custody arrangement. Asset management and advisory tasks, however, are performed by the pension funds themselves or by third parties. In its role as global custodian, Credit Suisse has no influence on the performance of individual pension funds.
